Grind & overlay
Challenge Asphalt Overlay and Grinding Services
There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to commercial asphalt. When developing a long-term maintenance plan with your team, we often recommend a combination of grinding and overlays. Grinding (also called milling or cold planing) involves grinding up the current surface to the desired depth to achieve a smooth and even surface for repaving and adding overlays. We’ve provided cost-effective solutions for a commercial lot or roadway’s longevity with asphalt overlay and grinding services for decades. Whatever the scope, we can deliver.

Benefits of Overlays and Grinding
+ Improved pavement profiles and cross-sections
+ Restored drained flow
+ Increased curb appeal and property value
+ Improved bonding
+ Reclaimed material for future use (we can recycle grindings to be used on ranch roads or as a base in hot or cold asphalt mixes)
+ Ability to use in conjunction with petromat overlays for a longer lifecycle
+ Economical alternative to full parking lot removal
What to expect
When you choose Challenge Asphalt for your asphalt overlay and grinding needs, you get our best-in-class equipment, decades of experience, and commitment to your project. With our advanced machinery, we remove a layer of asphalt to overlay it with new material. If the grades are too high to accommodate a new lift, our cold planer grinds the existing material down and turns the material into fine chips, which we remove from the site. Depending on the state of your current lot, we may require only hard point transitions (such as sidewalks or cement floors) to be ground down to accommodate the new asphalt lift. However, some require the entire surface to be ground down for proper paving grades.
After repaving
After repaving, we often recommend adding a petromat overlay system. The petromat paving fabric is saturated with an asphalt tack coat, forming a substantial interlayer media to absorb stress. The result is a more durable parking lot that can absorb stresses along cracks and joints within the fabric and not translate them onto the asphalt overlay.
Depending on your commercial asphalt goals, our team will walk you through a maintenance plan that combines grinding, petromat overlays, and seal coating every couple of years.
